Transmission network operator Transgrid has opened applications for its 2026 Apprentice Program, offering school leavers, young and mature age career changers the chance to develop hands-on skills and qualifications, and play a key role in Australia’s energy transition.
Transgrid executive general manager of people and culture Stephen McSweeney said, “As Australia accelerates one of the world’s most ambitious clean energy transitions, we need a skilled workforce ready to meet new challenges.

“There has never been a more exciting time to join a career in the energy sector, and our Apprentice Program is designed to equip participants with the practical experience, mentorship, and nationally recognised qualifications to accelerate their careers.
“We’re looking for curious and committed candidates who want to seize the unique opportunities across regional NSW and make a meaningful contribution to Australia’s energy transition through the network that powers 3.5 million homes and businesses across NSW and the ACT.”
The program provides apprentices with hands-on experience working on large-scale infrastructure projects including EnergyConnect, HumeLink and VNI West, supported by technical training, face-to-face learning and mentorship from industry professionals at key sites across NSW.
Roles are being offered for Electrical Substation Technician Apprentices, Telecommunications Technician Apprentices and Transmission Line Apprentices.
Transgrid talent acquisition advisor early careers Kailee Standen, who began her career as an apprentice, has built a an 11-year career with Transgrid, holding various trade roles before pivoting to help recruit and develop the next generation of industry professionals.

“Joining Transgrid as an apprentice was a life-changing experience. It opened so many doors and helped me build a career I’m proud of. I’m excited to see new apprentices take the same path,” Standen said.
Applications for the 2026 Apprentice Program are open now, with positions available at various locations including Eastern Creek, Newcastle, Orange, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga, and Yass.
