Renewables developer Squadron Energy has applied to Victoria’s Essential Services Commission (ESC) seeking an electricity retail licence to sell electricity to medium and large business customers throughout the state.
The licence application has been made under the name Squadron Energy Retail Pty Ltd (SQER).

According to the application, in the first phase of the business SQER will undertake limited marketing activities, only making offerings to select Commerial & Industrial (C&I) customers.
“As a newly formed organisation, SQER has brought together a team of highly skilled professionals with deep experience in the retail energy sector,” the company said in its application.
“Many of the key team members have held senior roles at leading energy retailers, offering invaluable industry insight. The management team has a wealth of experience across retail, wholesale, generation, and commodity markets, with a proven track record in delivering renewable energy projects across Australia.”
A person or entity wanting to engage in the activity of selling electricity by retail in Victoria is required to hold a licence granted by the ESC.
The ESC will only grant an electricity retail licence if satisfied that the applicant has the technical capacity to comply with the conditions of the licence; is financially viable to undertake the licensed activity; and is ‘fit and proper’ to hold a licence in Victoria.

In considering the application, the ESC is inviting feedback from stakeholders until 14 September 2026, and will make a decision later this year.
