AGL Energy has been granted federal environmental approval for its proposed Muswellbrook Battery in New South Wales.

The 150MW/300MWh Muswellbrook Battery was given the enviro tick subject to conditions relating to the habitat preservation of the Hunter Valley Delma—a legless or flap-footed lizard.

The project, which has also cleared state planning approval, will be built to the west of the existing Ausgrid substation at Muswellbrook.

The battery has the potential to improve the reliability and stability of the grid, and AGL says it expects the battery to provide socioeconomic outcomes including the potential benefits relating to increased employment opportunities.

The project is expected to provide up to 60 jobs during the construction phase and up to three full-time jobs during operation.

AGL is engaging with the local community, state and federal government, Muswellbrook Shire Council, Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council, Wanaruah/Wonnarua Traditional Custodians, and residents and business owners in the region about the project.
