100,000 lose power as wild weather hits Victoria

More than 100,000 Victorian homes and businesses lost power after a severe storm lashed the state, downing trees and power lines.

Crews worked through the night to restore power while State Emergency Service crews responded to more than 1000 call-outs.

Intense winds blew were responsible for much of the damage, with gusts of nearly 90km/h hitting Mildura in the state’s far north-west.
Laverton recorded a wind gust of 98km/h while Bendigo was hit by a 111km/h gust at 6.34pm. Kilmore Gap reached a 117km/h wind gust at 7.28pm and Wangaratta recorded one of 113km/h at 7.21pm.

Among the damage, a footpath collapsed at Surrey Hills, severing water and gas lines. Hail stones measuring more than an inch in diameter were also noted in Ferntree Gully.
