Western Power responds as storms affect 60,000 customers

Western Power crews have worked through the night restoring power to customers affected by the storms and strong winds yesterday.

At the peak, more than 60,000 customers were without power, mostly across the Perth metropolitan area, when strong winds brought down trees onto the network and debris was flown into powerlines.

At 12pm today, the total number of customers without power was about 6000.

Western Power’s acting chief executive officer Guy Chalkley congratulated crews for their efforts to safely restore power to as many customers as possible, saying that conditions they faced yesterday and overnight were immensely challenging.

“It’s been our first big test of the winter storm season and I want to thank our Western Power crews and employees for coming together to restore power for our customers as safely as possible,” Mr Chalkley said.

“Many of our customers experienced outages yesterday and some continue to be without power today, but rest assured we are working hard to find the faults, repair damage and restore electricity supplies as soon as we can.”

The storms created 750 individual hazards across the entire metropolitan electricity network, which is nearly double the average, and crews were required to attend every site. In addition, more than 43,000 calls have been made to Western Power’s Perth-based contact centre.
