Neoen Australia has announced the stage 1 operationality of its 270MW/540MWh Western Downs Battery in Queensland.
The Western Downs Battery is co-located with Neoen’s 460MW solar farm. Stage 2 of the BESS project will see another 270MW/540MWh battery built adjacent to stage 1.

In a statement on LinkedIn, Neoen Australia said, “We are proud to see our first big battery in Queensland operating in & strengthening the national electricity market at a capacity of 270MW/540MWh, with grid-forming capabilities.
“Stage 1 of Western Downs Battery has completed all construction and commissioning works and is ready to support its multiple virtual battery customers including AGL, ENGIE, and Shell Energy Australia.
“Thanks to Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and our lenders, including the Clean Energy Finance Corporation for trusting our end-to-end expertise in accelerating Australia’s energy transition.
“We are thankful for the ongoing support from surrounding communities—especially to the skilled workers, local businesses, and suppliers—who have been working with us on these projects. Shout-out to UGL, Tesla, Powerlink Queensland, and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) for their close collaboration and teamwork.”

The Western Downs battery is a grid-scale battery that leverages leading-edge technology, connecting into Australia’s national electricity grid via the transmission network.
As an industrial sized battery energy storage system, the battery will provide grid stability by dispatching stored energy to the grid during peak times of demand.
