Iberdrola Australia‘s 65MW/130MWh Smithfield Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Smithfield, NSW, has been officially inaugurated.

The BESS, combined with the existing 125MW Smithfield Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) plant, forms the Iberdrola Australia Smithfield Energy Facility (SEF).

The Smithfield Energy Facility plays a vital role in enhancing the company’s flexible firming capabilities in the NSW region of the National Electricity Market (NEM), supporting wind and solar generation across Iberdrola Australia’s renewable energy portfolio.

The Smithfield BESS also actively participates in all Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) markets, supporting and enhancing network stability and reliability of the broader electricity system.

Iberdrola Australia CEO Paul Simshauser said, “We’re very excited to have Minister Sharpe here today in Western Sydney, to officially open our recently completed Smithfield BESS, which was the recipient of an LTESA in the NSW Roadmap Tender Round 2.”

“This project was delivered ahead of schedule and on budget, delivering certainty to NSW consumers.”

Iberdrola Australia’s proposed Kingswood Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has also been successful in being awarded a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) as part of the NSW Roadmap Tender Round 6 for Long Duration Storage.

The Kingswood Battery (100MW/1080MWh) will be able to dispatch power for at least 8 hours, and is located near Transgrid’s Tamworth substation, within the suburb of Kingswood.
