Spanish-owned renewables developer Iberdrola has acquired the Tungkillo battery storage project in South Australia from the RES Australia.

The 270MW/1080MWh battery storage project has land, key approvals and advanced connection rights secured, and is expected to be operational by 2028.
The acquisition of the Tungkillo battery is in line with the group’s recently presented 2025-28 plan, which foresees total investments of more than $1.8 billion in Australia.
In Australia, Iberdrola has two other projects under construction in Smithfield, New South Wales, and Broadsound, Queensland, which will come into operation in 2026.
Iberdrola Australia says construction works are now underway at Broadsound Solar and Battery, the company’s first project in Queensland.

The company already has an operational 25MW/52MWh battery adjacent to its Lake Bonney wind project in South Australia.
