Windlab‘s 1.4GW Wongalee wind farm near Hughenden has received development approval from the Queensland Government.
Windlab chief development officer Nathan Blundell said the approval marked a major step forward in unlocking the enormous renewable potential of North Queensland.

“Wongalee will play an essential role in delivering critical infrastructure, regional investment, and long-term employment opportunities to Hughenden and the broader Flinders Shire,” he said.
“The project is expected to benefit from planned transmission upgrades, including CopperString 2032, which would enable large-scale renewable generation to reach the grid and strengthen Queensland’s energy security.”
The approval follows around two years extensive technical design, detailed environmental assessments, and ongoing engagement with Traditional Owners, landholders, government agencies, and the local community.

With state development approval now secured, the project will move into detailed design and delivery planning, and EPBC assessment.
Wongalee is designed not only to coexist with the region’s foundational agricultural industry, but to complement and enhance it. The project will generate enough clean energy to power 500,000 homes annually.
