Tasmanian electricity transmission and distribution company TasNetworks is appealing to the public for information regarding a serious act of vandalism in northern Tasmania on Sunday afternoon.
A mattress was set on fire next to an electrical substation at Rocherlea, causing extensive damage, and leaving approximately 1500 customers without power across Launceston’s northern suburbs.

TasNetworks head of asset management Josh Cunningham said it was a deeply reckless act.
“Tasmanians need electricity that’s safe, reliable and sustainable,” Cunningham said.
“This sort of vandalism puts communities at risk. It left customers without power on a cold day. And TasNetworks is left dealing with expensive damage that’s eventually paid for by Tasmanians.”
Cunningham said criminal consequences were often the best deterrent for vandals.
“We’d encourage anyone with information that might lead to an arrest and conviction to come forward in service to their community,” he said.
