Queensland’s state-owned Stanwell and global investment firm Quinbrook have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pilot a new 8-hour duration battery at the Stanwell Power Station site in Central Queensland.
The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project—believed to be one of the world’s first genuine 8-hour batteries—will explore the deployment of long-duration EnerQB BESS technology developed by CATL, a global leader in battery manufacturing.
Unlike other big batteries, the EnerQB BESS is purpose-built for eight hours of energy storage—a potential game-changer for firming renewable energy, supporting industrial growth and decarbonisation.

The 12-month trial forms an integral part of Quinbrook’s broader plans to deliver the Gladstone State Development Area (GSDA) Energy Hub Project, in conjunction with Private Energy Partners.
Stanwell CEO Michael O’Rourke said Stanwell would host the project at Stanwell’s Energy Precinct adjacent to the power station, where the performance, scalability, and commercial potential of the EnerQB BESS will be tested over a 12-month period.
“This is an opportunity to demonstrate a new long-duration 8-hour battery that could innovate how we power both industry and communities,” O’Rourke said.
“The system can absorb and store an entire day’s worth of solar generation when prices are low and then deliver a continuous eight-hour supply during peak demand.
“It offers consistent, cost-effective energy without the need to stack or sequence multiple units.
“Stanwell and Quinbrook have a strong partnership, and we’re proud to be exploring innovative technologies that can support Queensland’s energy reliability and economic growth.”
