Queensland’s Stanwell has completed its second major planned power station unit overhaul this year to be able to meet any increase in demand this summer.

Stanwell invested approximately $165 million in 2024 including more than $110 million on two major overhauls including:

  • $53 million for the Unit Two planned overhaul at Tarong Power Station, that required an extra 500 workers over three months and injected $10 million into the South Burnett economy; and
  • $60 million for the Unit Two planned overhaul at Stanwell Power Station, that also required an extra 500 workers and injected $10 million into the Central Queensland economy around Rockhampton.

Stanwell CEO Michael O’Rourke said, “Stanwell is committed to providing a reliable and secure energy supply to Queenslanders.

“We operate two of the most efficient and reliable coal-fired power stations in Australia, the Stanwell Power Station west of Rockhampton, and the Tarong power stations near Kingaroy.

“From these power stations, we were able to deliver more than 19TWh of energy last year to the NEM and provide more than a third of all of Queensland’s power with a reliability factor of more than 99%.

“Our assets are required to have regular maintenance, to ensure they are kept in good condition and continue to deliver electricity reliably and safely, including during the hot summer energy-intensive months.

“Summer brings a natural increase in energy consumption as homes and businesses rely on air conditioners to cope with the heat and as we experience summer weather events that place further strain on the network.

“As temperatures rise and energy consumption increases, Stanwell has implemented a range of measures including unit overhauls to ensure the continued reliability of our operations.

“Our team has worked diligently to ensure that our systems are robust and ready to handle the increased load.”
