The Western Downs Battery is being built within the Western Downs Green Power Hub near the town of Chinchilla in Queensland.

The four-hour battery will consist of 312 Tesla Megapack 2XL units and will be equipped with grid-forming capabilities. It will connect into Powerlink’s Western Downs substation, leveraging existing infrastructure at Western Downs.

Stages 2 and 3 will provide up to two-hour and four-hour capacity services to Nectr, while Stage 3 will deliver up to four-hour capacity services to SmartestEnergy.

“Today, we are thrilled to be delivering tailored services to meet the needs of several customers including AGL Energy, Shell Energy and ENGIE AU,” Neoen said in a statement on LinkedIn.

“We are grateful for their trust in our capabilities and are proud of our teams for repeatedly demonstrating the critical role of storage in the energy transition.

“Construction of Stage 3 is progressing well, thanks to the hard work of our project team including Tesla, UGL, and local contractors.”

Neoen is currently preparing the site for the installation of 312 Tesla Megapack 2XL units before end of this year.
