EnergyAustralia said an air duct in unit three collapsed during maintenance, detaching from the boiler and crashing to the ground. There were no injuries.

The company said it expected the unit to be offline for at least two weeks and it was investigating “to ensure the integrity of similar equipment”.

“EnergyAustralia’s priority is to ensure our people continue to remain safe,” the company said.

WorkSafe is also investigating the incident to determine whether further action was needed.

Yallourn Power Station is one of Australia’s oldest coal-fired facilities and is scheduled to close in 2028.
