Victoria’s Lighting the Regions project – which will oversee the replacement of approximately 23,000 street lights across an area covering almost 45 per cent of the state – is nearing completion of Stage One, with more than 20,000 streetlights changed since the project commenced.
Replacing the streetlights with energy efficient technology is expected to ill reduce energy consumption and save regional councils more than $57 million over 20 years in energy costs.
CitiPower and Powercor is the Distribution Network Service Provider for the Lighting the Regions project and maintains and operates the streetlighting infrastructure on behalf of the local government partners.
The Lighting the Regions project recently visited the small town of Warracknabeal in the Yarriambiack Shire to inform the local community on streetlight changeover and how to be more energy efficient in the home.
Many of the locals commented on how they noticed the increased bright lighting in their streets as a result of the changeover, and the overall response from the local community was very positive toward the project. This $11.6M project received more than $5 million of funding from the Australian Government and will run until June 2016.
