The Australian Energy Council today urged policymakers to review the events in South Australia which caused last week’s state wide blackout and create a ‘considered’ national energy strategy.
AEC chief executive Matthew Warren said last week’s blackout was triggered by weather events and a subsequent investigation would determine all the factors that caused the blackout.
“Increased interconnection should be part of a considered national energy strategy, not a political response to a major blackout,” Mr Warren said.
“These are 50-year assets that may have material impacts on generation at both end of the interconnector.”
“The Australian Energy Market Operator is still completing its preliminary review of what happened last week.
“This should inform careful consideration of which measure should be taken to make the South Australian grid more resilient.”
