Spanish infrastructure, energy, services and telecommunications group Elecnor has been awarded a contract to construct a 400 kilovolt (kV) transmission line in Finland, worth EUR 11.2 million.

The new project, promoted by Fingrid, sees the Group break into this Scandinavian region with a landmark agreement, as this new line will be the most modern line in the country. Fingrid is the public limited company responsible for transmitting power through Finland’s high-voltage transmission network.

Elecnor will develop a 59-kilometre stretch of the so-called ‘Forest Line’ located in Central Finland between the towns of Petäjävesi and Pyhänselkä. The construction of this new infrastructure—scheduled for completion by September 2022—represents a major technical challenge, as construction will be carried out under extreme conditions.

The aim of the project is to replace the current system—the useful life of which is shortly coming to an end—and virtually double the system’s power capacity from the current 220 kV to 400 kV. The Forest Line will be approximately 310 kilometres long in total.
