Thousands of Territorians are without power in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Fina, a Category 3 storm that brought down powerlines and trees and caused damage to homes.

With top gusts of 195km/h and sustained winds of 140km/h near the centre of the system, Fina blasted Darwin and the Tiwi Islands. Fortunately, no loss of life has been recorded.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said approximately 19,000 homes and businesses had lost power, with restoration crews working around the clock.

“In true territory spirit, neighbours are coming out with chainsaws and everyone’s chipping in,” Finocchiaro told media.

“This cyclone saw a territory that was united and prepared for what was to come, and as a result, we’ve seen largely minimal impact and no injuries.”

For many Territorians, TC Fina brought with it painful memories of Cyclone Tracy, which wiped out much of the city on Christmas Day 1974, killing 66 people.
