The world’s largest single-unit direct-drive floating offshore wind turbine by capacity and rotor diameter has officially rolled off the production line, jointly developed by China Huaneng Group Co Ltd and Dongfang Electric Corporation.

The 17MW behemoth has a rotor diameter of 262m, with a swept area of approximately 53,000 square meters. It is designed to withstand waves exceeding 24m and ‘super typhoons’ with winds up to 220km/h.

The powerful new turbine marks a new breakthrough in the country’s offshore wind power equipment manufacturing, China Huaneng Group Co Ltd.

Each unit is capable of generating about 68 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually—enough to meet the yearly power needs of approximately 40,000 households.

Key components for the new turbine are all produced in China. The unit is suitable for wind resource development in waters deeper than 50m and is tailor-made for deep and distant sea environments.

Last year, DongFang Electric Corporation rolled the world’s biggest offshore wind turbine off its production line in Fuqing, East China’s Fujian province.

Leading the field in ‘world’s largest’ titles, China is also home to the world’s biggest wind farm.
