Gippsland Dawn had been granted both a feasibility licence and Major Project Status by the federal government.

Plans for the offshore wind project comprised up to 140 bottom-fixed turbines located 10 to 33km off the Gippsland coast, with potential to power more than 1 million homes.

Capital investment of approximately $10 billion was proposed, with construction expected to begin in 2029 and the project projected to be operational by 2031.

BlueFloat has also proposed two other offshore wind farms off the New South Wales coast.

The project’s cancellation has raised fresh concerns about Victoria’s energy security against the scheduled closures of coal-fired power stations Yallourn and Loy Yang A.
