The George Town Solar Farm has been given planning approval by the local council.
The project, developed by Epuron, will be Tasmania’s first utility-scale solar farm.
The 5MW solar farm will be built on approximately 12 hectares and will utilise tracking photovoltaic (PV) systems.
In a statement, Epuron said it was very excited to progress its first Tasmanian solar farm.
“This project will offer tangible benefits to the local community while diversifying and strengthening the state’s energy mix,” the company said.
The project will provide clean energy to around 1200 homes.
Epuron is now finalising the grid-connection arrangements for this project and preparing for construction to commence in 2018.
Earlier this month, Epuron received approval from the NSW Government to build Australia’s largest wind farm.
The $642 million, 1GW Liverpool Range Wind Farm will consist of up to 267 wind turbines and four substations.
