7600 lose power in Gold Coast blackout

A major power outage hit the Gold Coast on Wednesday morning, cutting power to 7600 customers and blacking out dozens of traffic lights.

The outage occurred when construction workers cut through an underground cable on Ferry Road just after 11am.

More than 7650 homes and businesses were blacked out in the CBD, while a further 1220 properties were affected in Labrador, 121 in Ashmore and 12 in Main Beach, according to mygc.com.au.

Energex crews investigated the cause of the outage and were able restore power to 7,306 properties by midday.

At 5.30pm more than 50 homes and businesses in Southport were still without power. The blackout disrupted many businesses, who were forced to minimise operations, or close.
