Australian-owned renewable energy company Tilt Renewables has celebrated the official opening of the Latrobe Valley Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Morwell, south-west of Melbourne.

Latrobe Valley BESS was officially launched by the Victorian Minister for Climate Action, Energy and Resources, The Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio MP.

The battery is a 100MW Energy Storage System located beside the existing Morwell Terminal Station on Monash Way, just south of the Princes Freeway.

The Latrobe Valley BESS works by storing excess energy—particularly from solar generation during the day—and releasing it during high-demand periods, such as evenings. This helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels, smooth out fluctuations in supply, and improve grid reliability.

Tilt Renewables CEO Anthony Fowler said, “This project wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible efforts of our team, the support of the Latrobe Valley community, and the expertise of our delivery partners Fluence, AEMO, and AusNet.

“Together, we’ve built a system that will play a vital role in Australia’s energy transition. We’re proud to invest in the Latrobe Valley and contribute to its transformation into a hub for clean energy innovation.

“It’s a big win for Victoria and a significant milestone for Tilt Renewables, which is a leading Australian-owned renewable energy business and the largest owner of wind and solar generation in the country.”

Fluence Australia general manager Jason Beer said, “We are proud to have partnered with Tilt Renewables, working together to support grid reliability and greater renewable energy integration for Victoria.

“Latrobe Valley BESS is the first project globally to deploy the full Fluence product ecosystem alongside our OS7 operating system. It brings together our Gridstack energy storage system, Mosaic AI-powered bidding software, and Nispera asset performance management platform—all working together to maximise performance, value, and resilience.”
