Australian-born battery firm Redflow says its zinc-bromine battery technology has been identified as the preferred battery technology for a 6.6MWh project recommended for grant funding in the US.

The Barona Band of Mission Indians’ project is focused on energy storage for resilience and has been recommended for a CEC award. Grant terms are currently being negotiated and finalised, with the aim of beginning development activities for its energy project by the second half of this year and anticipated deployment in 2025.
The Barona Band worked with Prosper Sustainably and Microgrid Initiatives to prepare the proposal, in collaboration with Redflow Limited and US cleantech firm Ameresco.
Redflow CEO and managing director Tim Harris said the project further demonstrates Redflow’s technology capabilities at a commercial multi-megawatt hour scale, and will deliver greater resiliency and grid-infrastructure benefits for the Barona Band of Mission Indians.
“Subject to completion of the grant award process, this would be Redflow’s fourth multimegawatt hour project in California involving the CEC as a funding partner, and would again demonstrate that Redflow’s LDES technology is flexible to operate, allowing 100% depth of discharge without impairing BESS capacity or lifespan, and achieving MWh-scale battery hibernation for resilient clean energy operations, aligned with California’s decarbonisation goals,” Harris said.

Barona Tribal Council chairman Raymond Welch said, “The Barona Community LDES Project will accelerate the Barona Band’s progress toward greater energy resiliency and sustainability, and will help the Band to achieve greater energy sovereignty through control over our own energy resources.”
