Fortescue Metal Group’s Christmas Creek mine in Western Australia is planning to add an additional 13 QSK78 gensets in 2012.
The new gensets will make it the biggest diesel power station in Australia, matching demand from China as Pilbara ramps up production to meet the country’s demand for the key steel-making raw material.
The new power station is currently powered by 14 Cummins QSK78 diesel generator sets, each with a prime power rating of 2.2 MW.
Contract Power designed and built the power station as well as owns and operates it.
The fact it marks the first major installation of QSK78 gensets in the world doesn’t concern Contract Power general manager Marc Grosser.
“We like trying new equipment… we’re certainly not afraid of it,” he said.
“We believe it gives us a leading edge over our competitors.”
