Managing low-voltage networks in Australia’s distributed energy transition

To support the transition to a more decentralised and electrified energy system, network operators must move beyond traditional planning assumptions toward real-time orchestration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)—particularly as reforms such as the Minimum Demand Backstop and the Integrating Price-Responsive Resources (IPRR) program place new operational requirements on distribution businesses.

These implementation challenges were a central focus at Energy Networks Australia Conference & Exhibition (EN26), where Itron demonstrated how distributors can achieve network stability and renewable optimisation through LV orchestration platforms that support compliance with emerging DER integration frameworks.

Itron’s IntelliFLEX LV Distributed Energy Resource Management System (LV DERMS) addresses this need by leveraging GIS and ADMS data to disaggregate consumer consumption and behaviour into baseload, rooftop PV generation, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and the impact of electric vehicle (EV) charging. The platform then forecasts how these drivers will affect the network, calculates potential capacity violations and enables operators to automate export limit control to CSIP-AUS compliant devices.

This supports distribution utilities in operationalising DER visibility in line with AEMC compliance pathways, while positioning networks to deliver capabilities aligned with the 2027 IPRR implementation timeline.

Beyond forecasting and planning, Itron’s Grid Edge Intelligence applications extend network awareness directly into homes. Using local processing of high-resolution 32kHz waveform analysis, these applications can detect incipient issues such as downed conductors, fault conditions and early-stage bushfire risks.

Grid Edge Intelligence also enables behind-the-meter visibility into energy usage patterns, supporting automated load control in response to changing network conditions. This is particularly relevant in the context of EV adoption, where coincident charging events can push distribution transformers beyond safe operating limits.

Through coordinated intra-home load balancing, Itron’s applications can manage EV charging alongside household demand, maintaining total load within predefined limits. At a local network level, aggregated control across multiple premises allows utilities to smooth demand spikes at the transformer, supporting higher EV uptake while minimising the need for capital-intensive network augmentation.

Taken together, these capabilities allow operators to detect, analyse and forecast DER impacts while applying automated or operator-supervised control—enabling renewable energy resources to safely coexist within existing LV networks while supporting compliance with emerging DER integration requirements.
