FRV Australia has announced the successful commissioning of the Terang Battery, its first utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Australia.
Situated in Terang, Victoria, the battery has a capacity of 100MW/200MWh, which will help strengthen the stability and resilience of the electricity grid.

Terang was bolstered by an $7 million grant awarded through the second round of the Victorian Government’s Energy Innovation Fund (EIF), supporting the deployment of new grid-forming inverter technology. This initiative forms part of the Victorian Government’s efforts to achieve its target of 65% renewable energy generation by 2030.
Canadian Solar served as EPC contractor for the project, with TEC-C delivering the balance-of-plant works. The facility incorporates 48 SolBank 3.0 e battery containers, manufactured by e-Storage, and 38 SMA inverters.
FRV Australia CEO Michael Steiner said the commissioning of Terang marked a defining moment for the company.
“The project demonstrates our ability to develop and operate utility-scale dispatchable energy infrastructure that supports Australia’s energy transition,” he said.
“It provides critical firming capacity during peak hours while helping to strengthen grid reliability. We are proud to contribute to Victoria’s energy future through a solution that combines sustainability, innovation and benefits for local communities.”
Terang is the company’s first standalone battery energy storage project, increasing its portfolio of operational assets in Australia to nine and adding dispatchable energy capacity to FRV Australia’s predominantly solar generation portfolio.
The battery forms part of FRV Australia’s expanding battery energy storage portfolio in Victoria. The company is developing the 250MW/500MWh Gnarwarre Battery Energy Storage System, currently under construction and targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
