Energy event puts electrical safety in the spotlight

Electricity companies gathered for one of Australia’s biggest energy industry field days in May.

EnergyAustralia hosted some 3000 workers and more than 80 exhibitors from the electricity, utilities and infrastructure industries at this year’s Electricity Supply Industry Field Days at the Sydney Showground.

Field Days 2010 showcased the latest technology and workplace practices designed to further improve safety across the energy industry.

Visitors had the chance to brush-up on their skills in competitions and training demonstrations including a test flight of EnergyAustralia’s unmanned aerial vehicle, confined space rescue drills and virtual reality training.

EnergyAustralia executive general manager distribution operations and reliability, John Eisenhuth, said the organising committee had tailored this year’s event to promote wider participation.

“The popularity of the field days really has grown over the past 21 years with this year’s event the biggest of its kind,” Mr Eisenhuth said.

“We have an additional 20 exhibitors on hand this year conducting a range of demonstrations including firefighting, working at heights, ground penetrating radar and high voltage live-line presentations.

“Safety in the workplace remains the central theme behind the field days with industry-specific activities allowing visitors to share their expertise with other workers in the energy sector.”
