Behavioural science drives energy savings

Residential energy customers in Australia’s eastern states could save up to $253 million a year on their energy bills following EnergyAustralia’s launch of new technology.

The product, known as MyEnergyReport, was developed by global energy efficiency software company Opower and uses leading technology and behavioural science to drive large-scale energy savings for energy customers.

Available through a secure web portal and in printed report form, MyEnergyReport is a quick and easy-to-use tool that gives residential customers a clear and personalised view of how they use energy, and how they compare to similar homes in their area. It also provides customised tips on how to reduce usage and save money.

EnergyAustralia group executive manager of retail Adrian Merrick said service has the potential to save 770GWh of electricity in just one year, which is enough to power all the homes in both Ballarat and Bendigo for 12-months.

“While the technology is incredibly smart, at its core, MyEnergyReport is based on the simplest and most traditional of local community principles – keeping up with the Joneses,” Mr Merrick said.

MyEnergyReport is currently free to EnergyAustralia residential customers in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Australian Capital Territory, and South Australia and does not rely on customers having a smart meter.
