Atmos Renewables has achieved financial close of the Merredin Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), marking a significant milestone as the company’s first greenfield development to enter the construction phase.
Upon completion, Merredin BESS will become Atmos’ 18th operational asset, its first in Western Australia, and its inaugural BESS project, further diversifying the company’s growing renewable energy portfolio.

Located approximately 8km southwest of Merredin in the Wheatbelt region, the 100MW/400MWh BESS, co-developed with joint venture partner Nomad Energy, will provide four hours of dispatchable energy storage.
The facility is strategically positioned midway along the 650km Muja to Kalgoorlie 220kV transmission line, supporting grid stability and energy security for the Wheatbelt and Eastern Goldfields regions.

The BESS will connect to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) via Western Power’s Merredin Terminal Station. It is expected to be the first project in Western Australia brought to construction under the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme, aimed at achieving 82% renewable energy by 2030.
Construction will be led by GenusPlus Group and the project will utilise Tesla Megapacks with grid-forming ready inverter technology. Western Power will manage the high-voltage connection works to the Merredin Terminal Station.
