Large-scale battery energy systems provider Akaysha Energy has announced the operationality of its Brendale BESS in South-East Queensland, almost five months ahead of schedule.

The 205MW/410MWh system will play a key role in supporting Queensland’s energy storage needs and delivering affordable, reliable power to households and businesses.

The Brendale BESS connects directly to the South Pine substation in Brisbane’s outer Northern suburbs, providing fast acting support to the National Electricity Market (NEM) and helping integrate more renewable energy into the grid.

Brendale BESS’s revenue is underpinned by a long-term battery revenue swap with Gunvor Group, a global energy powerhouse, balancing contracted and merchant exposure while preserving operational flexibility for Akaysha Energy to optimise bidding across energy and FCAS markets.

The BESS’s grid-forming capability, using the Tesla Megapack 2 battery energy storage units, also helps to increase the robustness of the network voltage of the nearby major Queensland transmission infrastructure.

Akaysha Energy CEO Nick Carter said, “Bringing the Brendale BESS online ahead of schedule is a massive achievement for the entire team. The functionality of the BESS, combined with the Guvnor offtake agreement will ensure consumers have reliable energy when they need it, at an affordable price.

“We’re grateful to our project partners Consolidated Power Projects Australia, Tesla, Wilson Transformer Company, Powerlink and our offtaker Gunvor Group, who have all played an integral part in bringing Brendale BESS online ahead of schedule.”
