AGL Energy has submitted plans for its grid-scale Abermain Battery project, proposed for development near Tivoli in South-East Queensland, for EPBC assessment.

The 125MW/500MWh battery will store electricity when it is plentiful and return it to the Queensland grid at times of peak demand or when electricity supply is limited. This battery will connect to the adjacent Powerlink Abermain Substation via a new underground transmission line.

Powerlink is separately developing the underground transmission line to connect the battery to Powerlink’s Abermain Substation as well as any required upgrades.

AGL Energy is targeting 1.4GW of grid-scale battery storage projects as part of its plan to transition from coal-fired generation and achieve net zero by 2035.

The projects include the Abermain Battery as well as four batteries across New South Wales.

Battery projects are leading a record surge of new generation and storage projects seeking connection to Australia’s main grid, as highlighted in AEMO’s latest Connections Scorecard.
