AGL has announced that from September 1 it will introduce automatic discounts for all residential and small business gas customers who have been on standing offers for more than one year.
AGL CEO Brett Redman said these customers would be protected by the same ‘safety net’ provided to electricity customers on standing offers from January 1 this year, before the Victorian Default Offer and the Default Market Offer were introduced.
“The initiative ensures all residential and small business gas customers who remain on a standing offer for a year are automatically entitled to a new discount, bringing them more in line with most AGL gas customers, who are on discounted market offers,” Mr Redman said.
The change means almost 140,000 residential gas customers on standing offers across Australia will receive a five per cent discount to their relevant gas standing offer usage and supply charges, providing an average saving of between $44 and $80 including GST per year, depending on which state they live in, from September 1.

The safety net will also protect small business gas customers on standing offers, with more than 6000 of them to receive a five per cent discount to their relevant gas standing offer usage and supply charges, providing an average saving of between $122 and $317 including GST per year, depending on which state they live in, from September 1.
“Importantly, this will occur automatically, without requiring standing offer customers to take action,” Mr Redman said.
Mr Redman said the move was aimed at addressing energy affordability for families and businesses across Australia.

“We want to ensure our loyal standing offer gas customers are rewarded for staying with AGL,” Mr Redman said.
“As a result of this initiative, thousands of them will receive automatic discounts without them having to lift a finger.
“This is part of our continuing process of helping customers with their energy, which initially included writing to them and urging them to seek a better deal.
“The discounts will apply until at least July 2020. We will also continue to provide standing offer customers with annual plan reviews encouraging them to take up a better offer if available.”
