The Australian Energy Council (AEC) has welcomed the Victorian Government’s power bill support for households facing immediate hardship.
The AEC’s chief executive Sarah McNamara said energy retailers are also continuing to support people who may be facing financial stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic and changed circumstances.
“The bill relief and improvements to energy efficiency in social housing are good initiatives that recognise the importance of maintaining connection to electricity,” she said.

“We know some households have been struggling and the Victorian Government’s rebate will be a direct help to customers. Energy retailers will work with the government to ensure this support gets to customers as soon as possible.
“There are a range of support options available to help customers and we encourage anyone who might be concerned about paying their power bills to contact their retailer as soon as possible.
“We recognise that asking for help can be a challenge, which is why we have been running a campaign to just remind customers there is support readily available and by having a confidential discussion with your retailer you can get an idea of the best options for you.

“Assistance may vary depending on individual situations, but can include payment plans, bill smoothing and accessing grants like that announced today and concessions, as well as hardship programs.”
Ms McNamara, on behalf of the AEC, also welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of continued funding for its energy rebates and its expansion of energy accounts payment assistance for hardship customers.
